Since Sweden now has over 10000 points, they're always going to stay near the top of the list, even if all the Swedes suddenly mysteriously disappeared from the game, so I got this idea. We could model the FIFA national team ranking system so we can have a ranking of what teams are best and worst according to recent matches and the last World Cup placement, so the points will show something like a running average.

Here's an exemplary formula:

Win: 100 points, and if the losing team
- qualified for the previous World Cup, multiply by 2,0
- reached the 1/4 finals of the previous World Cup, multiply by 2,5
- placed 3rd or 4th in the previous World Cup, multiply by 3,0
- placed 2nd in the previous World Cup, multiply by 3,5
- won the previous World Cup, multiply by 4,0

Draws follow the same formula, except with half the points. So for example, if Spain draws Slovenia, Slovenia still gets more points because Spain did better in the last World Cup. Losses give no points.

Points given from a certain match are erased once three seasons have passed. This is the most important thing. Matches from four seasons ago would hold no weight.

If friendly NT matches are ever added, they would be worth either nothing at all or very little because managers would just play against weaker teams to gain easy points.

Go ahead and suggest a better formula, I just made this up as I wrote it.

Let's be clear, I do not want this to replace the old ranking, I'd prefer them both to exist alongside each other.

If this were to be implemented, we could calculate the points from the last three seasons so we wouldn't have to wait an entire year for the formula to start working as intended.

So, is this a good idea, or am I just wasting keystrokes?

I don't think we need that. The leagues themselves are a very good indicator of the strength of teams already, because every team plays against all the other teams twice. You could say that the World Cup works the same way, but in the end, only 16 teams qualify, and even they play just three to six games.

Yeah, the most important is to erase points for three or four seasons ago...
